With the Perris Portofino Collection, the Perris Monte Carlo brand takes us to a particularly pretty corner of Italy. Portofino – which I briefly confused with Positano and mistakenly placed on the Amalfi Coast – is actually located in Liguria, in north-western Italy, along the famous Riviera. This picturesque village, with its colorful houses, sits in a bay on a peninsula, surrounded by azure blue waters. Once a humble fishing village, Portofino has long been a hotspot for celebrities, stars, and socialites who anchor their yachts just off the coast. Especially in summer, Portofino is a popular destination for tourists from around the world and, despite its rather poor transport connections, often becomes overwhelmingly crowded.
Of course, the four fragrances in the Perris Portofino Collection leave no trace of this. In Riviera, Bel Sole, Fiori di Mare and Blu Profondo are the illustrious names of the compositions that the Perris Monte Carlo brand dedicates to the Ligurian coastal town and its impressive landscape. They were all created by the Italian perfumer Luca Maffei, who was inspired by the picturesque scenery and the special scents and aromas of the place. In addition to the eaux de parfum, the line also includes scented candles and diffusers as well as a skincare range with the scents of Blu Profondo and Fiori di Mare.
In Riviera – walk along the coast
Even though it’s still really cold here on the Baltic Sea and spring is still a long way off, the new Perris Portofino Collection will hopefully bring a little warmth and vacation feeling to the north. Luca Maffei walked up the hill to the Castello San Giorgio, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view over the bay and the harbor of Portofino.
The scent of the sea and the lush vegetation were just as inspiring to him as the play of light and shadow that divided the walkway and the surroundings into light and dark. The ingredients fleur de sel (sea salt), lemon blossom, rosemary, maritime notes, thyme, immortelle, cedarwood and woods are intended to reflect this excursion.
An airy, transparent and salty-cool hint pervades the opening of In Riviera, which is fresh, crystalline and delicately floral. Thyme reveals aromatic-greenish herbal notes that are tart, a little sharp and spicy and gradually take over the fragrance. Salty rosemary and herbaceous immortelle join forces with the plant from the labiate family, which is used as a spice and medicinal herb, to create an extremely atmospheric, Mediterranean trio that smells like summer in Italy. The herbs give the eau de parfum darker facets and lend it depth. The composition is rounded off with clean, light woods that echo and emphasize the powdery, transparent and light notes.

Bel Sole – under the beautiful sun
For Bel Sole, perfumer Luca Maffei was inspired by a visit to the piazetta of Portofino, a square lined with small, fine restaurants, cafés and bistros right on the harbor. Here you can enjoy the sun, soak up the hustle and bustle of the town and let the gentle sea breeze blow around your nose. For Luca Maffei, the ingredients bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, cardamom, juniper berries, ginger, lime, cedarwood, musk and cashmeran are emblematic of a relaxing visit to the Piazetta in Portofino.
Sparkling, invigorating and wonderfully summery, Bel Sole starts with a colorful mix of hesperides that are very light, airy and tart. Right from the start, the composition has a light, powdery undertone. The ginger brings a subtle fruity spiciness to the creation, while the juniper berries provide a gentle, woody-aromatic tingle. A hint of salt provides marine notes, while light woods and musk add clean, fluffy facets that harmoniously round off the creation.
