Force Majeure by BeauFort London – Force Majeure

British fragrance house BeauFort London has launched a new line on the market called Force Majeure. The label is known for its edgy, sometimes boundary-pushing creations, which are particularly popular with all those niche fragrance fans who prefer perfumes with rough edges and a certain idiosyncrasy. If you are looking for fragrances that are not necessarily pleasing, but are edgy and can also attract attention, you should definitely not miss these reviews of the new line.

BeauFort London - Pyroclasm

The new collection now bears the name Force Majeure, which translates as “Act of God”. In general, the term tends to have a legal or juridical connotation and is interpreted differently here depending on the country, sometimes due to a damaging coincidence such as a natural disaster, sometimes seen as an act of God. From this I conclude that no matter who or what is responsible for the force majeure, you yourself have no influence on it and must, may or can only deal with the consequences.

Of course, even I cannot influence the composition of the three new fragrances from BeauFort London, although I would not like to attribute their development to chance or a higher power. Rather, the Scottish perfumer Euan McCall was responsible for the creations, who is known for his unusual and distinctive compositions, including for his own label Jorum Studio and for Neandertal.

Pyroclasm – Broken by fire

Pyroclasm is the first of the three Force Majeure fragrances that I would like to introduce to you today. While the name immediately made me think of the pyroclastic flows of volcanic activity, the eau de parfum is actually inspired by the famous Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. Legend has it that it was built by a giant, but the Giant’s Causeway, which consists of thousands of meter-high, evenly shaped basalt columns, is actually the result of a volcanic eruption that – according to Wikipedia – took place around 60 million years ago. Perfumer Euan McCall created an olfactory interpretation of the Northern Irish landmark, which attracts countless tourists every year, with the fragrance notes metallic notes, black pepper, saffron, grapefruit, incense, elemi resin, mineral notes, ambergris, juniper, sandalwood, vetiver, styrax resin, labdanum (cistus) and Atlas cedarwood.

BeauFort London - Pyroclasm

Pyroclasm opens dark, spicy and airy with dry, mineral and cool, metallic nuances. Leathery saffron and resinous, smoky incense join in and give the creation depth, while grapefruit provides tangy, fruity accents. Peppery-citrusy and woody-coniferous notes combine with salty-greenish facets, giving me a sense of the marine aspect of the Giant’s Causeway. Pyroclasm gradually becomes more transparent and also a little powdery before the fragrance gradually fades away.

The eau de parfum by BeauFort London is much lighter, airier and cooler than I would have expected from a creation with the name component “pyro”, meaning “fire”. What the British fragrance house has brought out beautifully is the mineral-sandy component, as the source of inspiration, Giant’s Causeway, is made of rock after all. I also find the coolness, saltiness and freshness of the composition to be extremely harmonious and must admit that Pyroclasm is not as angular and edgy as I would have expected. Rather, Pyroclasm is a fragrance that can be worn for any occasion – and by that I mean both in terms of the season and the occasion. A great start to this exciting new line! 🖤
