The fact that I have a certain soft spot for the British fragrance house Penhaligon’s should at least be known to those of you who read here regularly. In addition to the classic creations, I particularly love the entertaining background stories and the beautiful bottles of the Portraits Collection, which have been delighting us olfactorily and visually for several years now. The Portraits’ intricate relationships with each other, their scheming, intrigues, love affairs, affairs, their very own characters, who are so wonderfully British, a little quirky, full of black humor and a good dose of snobbery, round off the overall package of this line perfectly. As you can see, I’m a fan, so the bar is set high for me when it comes to the brand’s latest collection: Potions & Remedies.
Potions & Remedies – Healing in fragrance form
The Potions & Remedies Collection is a line dedicated to potions and remedies and is already visually oriented towards traditional pharmacy. The bottles have a nostalgic touch with the fluted glass and these beautiful labels, which are surely a reminiscence of advertising over a hundred years ago.
The name of the collection alone has something traditional and old-fashioned about it, which the British label Penhaligon’s once again breathes modernity into in its very own way. With its typical British charm, a little quirky and so wonderfully nostalgic, the Potions & Remedies Collection immediately puts me in a good mood and is also a real eye-catcher. Or what do you think?
There is a cure for every disease. For every sorrow, there is a way out. The Potions & Remedies collection from Penhaligon’s contains effective powers to heal – or induce – altered states of mind. Fancy a recipe? Each fragrance harnesses the perfumed power of nature to bring health, strength and vitality to life.
Each fragrance in the collection is said to have a specific effect. Vra Vra Vroom is supposed to inspire and give new energy, A Balm of Calm is supposed to soothe, A Kiss of Bliss is supposed to provide bliss, Eau de Audacity is supposed to give self-confidence and Liquid Love is supposed to give passion and desire. Apart from the fact that the creations are certainly beautifully composed, how great are these names? Penhaligon’s simply manages to inspire me time and time again.
Vra Vra Vroom – Potions & Remedies
Vra Vra Vroom sounds so dynamic that it must be clear what it is all about. The eau de parfum is intended to energize, revitalize and inspire. Penhaligon’s draws on the power of nature for the Potions & Remedies Collection and combines the ingredients apricot, mandarin, bergamot, clary sage, osmanthus, rose, magnolia, leather and ambroxan for the light yellow fragrance.
Let’s go and hurry up! An energetic explosion of mandarin and magnolia, enthusiastic spoonfuls of osmanthus absolute. Spray your way to success. Nothing should stop you now.
However, I would of course like to emphasize that the creations are by no means genuine remedies. Of course, certain fragrances and scents can have a certain effect on us, but the eaux de parfum in the Potions & Remedies Collection do not actually have a healing effect. Now that this has been clarified, I would like to jump straight into the review and introduce you to today’s first candidate in more detail.
Vra Vra Vroom has a fine, fruity and velvety start to the fragrance. I find the opening quite sparkling, which makes the reference to the supposedly vitalizing effect absolutely clear. The creation is also fresh, bright and radiant. Gentle, wild leathery nuances join the fruity opening, which is dominated by apricot and citrus fruits, resulting in an incredibly beautiful blend to my taste. The leather in this eau de parfum is soft and creamy, very light and lucid. The flowers underline this impression and lend the composition additional airy, subtly sweet and fresh accents that round off Vra Vra Vroom beautifully.
The first fragrance in this new line from Penhaligon’s is an instant hit for me personally. A creation exactly to my taste. The finest, flowing, supple leather meets velvety-fruity and creamy-floral notes, rounded off with a good dose of feel-good fluffiness. I love it! Perfect for anyone who prefers light, rather delicate and minimalist unisex compositions that are absolutely suitable for everyday wear and the office and can be worn at any time of year. Vra Vra Vroom should definitely be at the top of your must-try list. 💛
A Kiss of Bliss – A kiss of bliss
A Kiss of Bliss is the feel-good fragrance among Penhaligon’s Potions & Remedies and this credo is also reflected on the label of the bottle. Bad moods and gloom should have no chance with this creation, because it is “an eau de parfum from sunny days that makes you dance all night long.” That sounds very promising, in my opinion. The ingredients clover, bergamot, rose, jasmine, heliotrope, green tea, musk, moss and patchouli are supposed to achieve this.
A hint of bergamot freshness meets spicy rose and greenish accents in the opening of A Kiss of Bliss, which I would spontaneously attribute to clover. The creation is very soft, creamy and subtly sweet as it progresses, less bright and lucid than I had expected, but rather muted, to put it mildly. The green tea provides subtly tart, flowing and watery accents in which the green notes of the opening are picked up again. Gradually, the creamy, powdery facets of the composition pick up speed, no doubt due to jasmine and musk, which are rounded off by similar patchouli and moss with delicate, earthy nuances.
Before testing A Kiss of Bliss, I spontaneously thought it would be a light-hearted, cheerful floral fragrance, but the eau de parfum actually reveals itself to be a quiet, calm and also slightly melancholic mix of creamy, spicy and greenish-fresh notes. For me, the eau de parfum has a certain vintage character, modernized of course, which fits perfectly with the overall presentation, imagery and packaging of the collection. This creation is also an absolute all-rounder in terms of season and occasion, which can be worn anytime and anywhere.
