Acne Studios by Frédéric Malle is the latest work from the Malle fragrance factory, which was created in collaboration with the Swedish fashion label Acne Studios. The hip label, founded in Stockholm in 1996 by Jonny Johansson, focuses on women’s and men’s fashion as well as accessories and shoes. Denim was and is a major theme at Acne Studios. The label shows its ready-to-wear collections at international fashion weeks and is also available in exclusive stores.
According to Wikipedia, the name ACNE was initially made up of the initial letters of Associated Computer Nerd Enterprises, which was later changed to Ambitionto Create Novel Expressions. Apparently, Jonny Johansson also found it appealing to transform a rather negative word like Acne into something really cool.
The fashion of Acne Studios, whose creative director is still the founder Jonny Johansson, can be described as simple, minimalist and pared-down. In a typical Nordic style that is cool, monochrome and incredibly cool. “The collections bear the signature of Jonny Johansson. They fuse design and attention to detail with a special focus on couture and a boundary-pushing selection of materials and tailored fabrics.”
Acne Studios meets Frédéric Malle
The collaboration between the fragrance house Frédéric Malle and Acne Studios is definitely something to be proud of. Visually, I find the style of the bottle and the color scheme absolutely appealing. The light, rather cool shade of pink is a characteristic feature of the Swedish fashion label and this color shade can be found both in the packaging and in the bottle itself. The base of the glass bottle is in this color, giving the perfume an exciting color gradient.
But that’s not the only extraordinary thing about this creation, which stands out from Frédéric Malle’s collection with its avant-garde look. It is also the last creation to be launched under the direction of namesake Malle, who recently retired from the brand. In fact, it was Frédéric Malle himself who suggested a collaboration to Acne Studios boss Jonny Johansson and – in keeping with tradition – asked for a meeting by letter. The young perfumer Suzy Le Helley was commissioned to create the eau de parfum, combining the fragrance notes of aldehyde, rose, violet, orange blossom, vanilla, peach, sandalwood and musk.
Cool & charming
Acne Studios by Frédéric Malle is a fragrance that fits perfectly into its own color concept. Candy pink, dazzling and avant-garde, is the program here. The aldehydes are very lush, velvety-soft, peachy-fruity, ethereal and yet very present, giving the creation an incredibly modern and abstract aspect. Rose, violet and orange blossom add to this olfactory accord in an incredibly harmonious way.
Powdery, floral, creamy, aldehydic … Acne Studios is all this and much more. On our Instagram account , one user wrote that the fragrance was very sweet and smelled like cotton candy. The eau de parfum is certainly sweet, sometimes more so, sometimes less so. I can also definitely understand the cotton candy reference, although I don’t detect any typical roasted sugar notes. However, the fluffiness, the pink coloring and the sweet, velvety and fruity nuances absolutely have a candy-floss character. And so Acne Studios by Frédéric Malle is also soft, smooth and peachy-sweet in the base, warmed and spiced by a pinch of sandalwood and vanilla musk.
The latest eau de parfum from Frédéric Malle combines the classic elegance and noblesse for which the cult fragrance house is known with the innovative, ultra-modern and hip coolness of Acne Studios. The aldehydes exude a gentle vintage character that evokes familiarity in an avant-garde, dazzling way. Powdery, airy flowers, a velvety peach fruitiness and the crystalline-clean finish round off the fragrance perfectly. A creation that is as contemporary as it is timeless and is sure to please fans of aldehydic compositions and Acne Studios. 🩷
